chapter twelve

Miles holds me the entire drive into the city. I recognize the three speed bumps and the small hill down into the parking garage.

We stop, but before our lives go any further, I turn and grab his face. “I love you, Miles. No matter what happens in there, I love you.”

He smiles, taking my hands from his cheeks, kissing both of them. “I know.” He kisses me gently, and then the doors open. “I love you,” he whispers.

We go in the same elevator as before but travel up more floors. It chimes when the doors open, and the hallway looks just like the other—all white with no furniture. I’m looking where we’re going, not paying attention to the rumblings around me.

Miles’s hand slips from mine, but I can’t move fast enough.

“Grace!” he shouts, reaching for me over the shoulders of too many officers.

“Miles!” I try shaking free of whoever has me but can only watch Miles be dragged into a room. Our eyes lock for only a second before the door clicks shut.

“What are you doing with him?” I demand, still fidgeting to get out of hands. No one answers, even when I yell and kick. A group of them just tow me around a few corners and toss me in a room. My knees bruise when they hit the marble. I touch my forehead to the cold floor, my fists at my temples. My chin shakes as I breathe in cries. I watch my tears fall to the floor, wishing bad memories would leave with them. After a few more minutes, I’m calm enough to pick myself up off the floor.

The room is just like the halls—white walls and no distractions. Everything is the same, except for the red couch against the back wall. Memories of it swarm through my mind.

I stare at the couch, but I’m not really seeing it. All my muscles begin tightening like I need to run, but I can’t run anywhere. I wipe my hands down my thighs as I stand and make my way to the couch. When I sit down, the boulders in my stomach double in weight. My fingers trace the seams, and I have the urge to pull on one of the threads and unravel the whole thing.

Looking up, I see a window on the other side of the room. Just through it is another room like mine. I run to it, wondering if Miles is in that one, but it’s empty.

The door to my room opens, but I keep my eyes on the window.

“You’ve looked better,” Chris laughs, tossing me a blanket. It lands at my feet, and although I’m freezing, I won’t pick it up. “Have a seat.”

I remind myself I have to listen if I want him to listen to me later. I turn around and sit down beside him. His arms are stretched along the back of the couch, but when I turn my face to him, his eyes darken.

He grabs my face with angry hands.
